The Importance of Health , Life and Long Term Care Insurance in IBD

I have lived in Various parts of the USA. I have found that health ins is of paramount importance in these issues of IBD as we IBD'ers tend to contribute to the hospitals more then others. I calculated from the time I was first diagnosed 1985 to 2006 all tests, labs, surgery's etc. close to 300,000K it amazes me. Without Health Ins / LTC IBD will sooner or later eat your savings. Some finer points for those of us without health ins who live in the USA. 1) Try to find a job ( if you do not have one already) that offers a health ins plan with unlimited lifetime benefits and is recalculated every calender year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) If you can, try to look into a government job ( USAJOBS) has listings; as the government, while pay is not the best; it has steady benefits and offers others such as life, LTC etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3) If you can afford it, buy LTC, Long Term Care, before 40 years old --- as this will protect your savings in older age if / when a nursing home has to be a option. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) When applying for life Ins, the gov will give you up to 6 times your base pay without a medical exam. If you try to get it with a private industry job, the premium might be too high or they will flag you as not insurable and this information gets sent to the ( MIB) medical information bureau and then it is accessible by many life, health companies. ---------------www.mib.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #4, When applying to life ins, you should always try to put a disclaimer (I do not authorize MIB to release any information without first contacting me and obtaining my premisison and advising me who is requesting such information , further I do not authroize storing of this reported information for longer then 90days after which MIB must obtain premission from me to keep storing my personal medical information) While MIB might put up a fuss about this, it is perfectly legal and they cannot prohibit such. When you apply to different life programs it stays on record I think for 7 years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5)Health Insurance in some states will pay for Enteral Formula, if not see below and try to pass to your states House Rep / senators to get a bill passed requiring such as MA and NH have. This way with the Doctors Note / prescription as writen below, it can get paid for. I think drinking Modulen / Peptamen aids greatly in health status and weight gain. I can say that these drinks have packed on 35 pounds for me and increased my overall health. ------------http://www.modulenibd.com/ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legislation For IBD

http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/legislation/1996/hb1431.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Each insurer that issues or renews any policy of group or blanket accident or health insurance providing benefits for medical or hospital expenses, shall provide to each group, or to the portion of each group comprised of certificate holders of such insurance who are residents of this state, coverage for the provision of nonprescription enteral formulas and food products required for persons with inherited diseases of amino acids and organic acids. Such coverage shall be provided when the prescribing physician has issued a written order stating that the enteral formula or food product is medically necessary and is the least restrictive and most cost effective means for meeting the needs of the patient.
